Back 1973, revellers flocked to the now famous Wigan Casino to hit the dancefloor to lost and forgotten tracks from Detroit, and the Northern Soul scene was born. To celebrate the arrival of Northern Soul DJs to play our Carnaby Street Style instore party this week, the Last Word will this week take a look back at one of Britain's most unlikely, yet enduring, subcultures.
The Wigan Casino was a nightclub in Wigan, England.Operating between 1973 and 1981, (1) it became known as a primary venue for Northern soul music. It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent).It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England.
Here we have the original cover up artists and titles from some of the biggest sounds played at Wigan Casino. The earliest goes back to around 1975 when much fewer records had their identities kept secret, up until the end of the Casino in 1981 where nearly all new discoveries were kept secret (for a time).

In late April 1975 Betty Wright gave what many considered to be the best live performance ever seen at the Wigan Casino. She took to the stage at around 3.30am and those that were present claim it was a spiritual earth-shattering performance. Some three weeks later and just 10 days after the legendary Jackie Wilson took to the stage the Casino.

Wigan Council owned the building and wanted to extend the nearby Civic Centre, but short of funding, it never went ahead.(citation needed) The club was closed on 6 December 1981; that final night of Wigan Casino in its northern soul state was DJ’d by Winstanley, and the 3 before 8 were played three times consecutively at the end of the night.
